I am an older woman, living on five mostly undeveloped acres just outside Roswell, N.M. (yes, THAT Roswell) who needs help mostly outside, trying to make my property self-sustainable. I’m learning as I go, so trying new things is always fun.
I’m semi-retired, but work very odd hours. I’ve been a sports writer (I love baseball), editor and photographer, ran my own sports Web site and still do freelance writing and work for local schools, helping with sporting events. I also merchandise and mystery shop, all of which keeps me out and about, so I need folks who can work on their own but don’t mind working with me or others as may be.
I’ve got two very old cats, two llamas, four goats, five chickens, two ducks and a duck/fish pond, as well as a garden which can produce pretty much year round.
My only restrictions: no pets, firearms, drugs and smokers MUST smoke outdoors only.
I don’t cook (so love people who do) and am nowhere near a neat freak. My house always looks lived in.
I’d love to have you come enjoy the bounty of my gardens and the wonders of southeastern New Mexico, and help me turn this patch of desert/prairie into a self-sufficient abode.

Thanks to some marvelous volunteers over the past year, the major (read: hard) work is done, so now I need folks who can help plant, weed, water and harvest my gardens, as well as feed and care for my llamas, goats, ducks and chickens.
Otherwise, there’s still some outdoor cleanup to be done and I love folks who come up with creative new ideas for my property. (And, if you’re into cooking or housekeeping, I won’t turn that down either.)
I also have several older motorcycles (my means of transportation) that could use some TLC if anyone has mechanical knowledge.
I do have a new project in mind that would benefit my visitors, that I’d like to do this summer, if possible.
I’d like to build a small (200 sq. ft. or so) guest house out of alternative building materials so I’m looking for someone with either experience or a strong interest.
I’d like it to include solar/wind electricity, a composting toilet, solar shower and ????
So, if you have any ideas or experience, let me know.
You’d get a private room (shared bath) in my home, and could work as many or as few hours a day as you’d like. I’m not a cook, and I work very odd hours, so I’ll buy your food but for the most part, it’ll be up to you to cook.
English, some Spanish, un petit peu Française
I have one guest room with a queen-sized bed, and it’s first-come, first-served. (Although long-term helpers get to move up if it vacates.) I also have a small office with a futon, and those two rooms are private. We all share one bath.
I also have an indoor pull-out couch and an outdoor pull-out couch (on the porch) as well as lots of room for camping or parking a van or camper.
I discovered this site through Couch Surfing, and quickly discovered I love meeting folks from around the world.
The help is nice, but just meeting interesting folks (which is what I’ve done lately) is the best part. I’m also a font of knowledge about what there is to do in New Mexico (aside from Roswell aliens) and would give you lots of time to explore.
Besides the alien stuff (museums, gift shops, etc.), Roswell has the Roswell Museum and Art Center, Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, NMMI Museum, Southwest History Museum, Spring River Zoo, Bottomless Lakes State Park and BItter Lakes Wildlife Refuge.
Roswell is three hours from three big cities: Albuquerque, NM; El Paso, TX; and Lubbock TX. Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks are two hours south; Cloudcroft and Ruidoso (mountain communities) just to the west; White Sands National Monument two hours to the west; and Lincoln State Monument (Billy the Kid), Ft. Stanton and Capitan an hour west.
