Hi! We are looking for WorkAway guests to help us for a couple weeks this May, 2015. Ideally, our WorkAway guests are available to arrive on ~ or near ~ May 6, 2015 and stay for about 2 weeks. We are looking for help during the day and early evening Monday – Friday. Our WorkAway guests are free every evening and the entire weekend (Saturdays and Sundays). We mainly need help with our pets. One of our two dogs is having some health issues. Her name is Lucy. She’s the fluffy white one in the photo. We also have 6 chickens, but they are very little work. Some light housework will be helpful as well. If you are interested, and available in this time frame, please write us and we can talk about details. Hi ~

Arjan and I are global-minded, animal-loving, eco-friendly, vegetarians. Arjan is a Dutch chemist and I am an artist & educator. Nils ~ Arjan’s/ our 16 year old ~ stays with us on the weekends. We have 2 rescue dogs and 6 pet chickens.

We live in San Diego, CA in a neighborhood called South Park that is known for its eco-friendly, walk-able, bike-able, close-knit community.

SOUTH PARK, our neighborhood, was featured as "BEST NEIGHBORHOOD TO LIVE IN IN SAN DIEGO" IN THE 2014 EDITION OF SAN DIEGO MAGAZINE."

We are a 5 – 10 minute walk to cafes, restaurants, small art galleries, quirky shops, etc, etc.! We are also a matter of miles to beaches, hiking trails and other beautiful nature spots. 🙂

Our Mediterranean-Craftsman home was built in the 1920’s and we are restoring it ourselves.

We look forward to hosting for a 10 day time frame.

1) References: we require a minimum of 2 references from people who wish to stay with us via workaway. * if you are new to WorkAway, your references can be from hosts through other organizations, such as WOOF (World Wide Organization of Organic Farmers), an employer/supervisor, etc. We have references from our WorkAway guests on our profile. 🙂

2) Health/Traveler’s insurance: people who wish to stay with us need to have health / traveler’s insurances. Our understanding is that it is very affordable through workaway. Here is their traveler’s insurance link:

3) Meals: We are vegetarians and have a vegetarian household. There are restaurants within walking distance for carnivorous guests in need of a meat fix; however, we keep a 100% meat-free home. Our refrigerator will be stocked. Guests are welcome to cook their own meals. We often have dinner together and are happy to include you when we are cooking and eating at home. We would also really like our WorkAway guests to cook a night or two, so we can learn how to make some of your favorite (vegetarian) dishes! 🙂

4) Sharing responsibilities: We believe in sharing certain household responsibilities, as hosts and guests generally do. For example, when we dine together, cooking, clearing the table, doing dishes, etc, is shared. We feel this is part of residing together and pitching in/contributing is for everyone. Time spent pitching in for these small, shared things is not considered WorkAway help hours.

5) Non-smokers only, please. One of us is very allergic to smoke, so even smoking outside the home will not work.

6) We plan to host for up to 10 days at a time.

Accommodation

A sunny bedroom down the hall. The bedroom is simple, yet has all you could need. It’s about 10 x 12. There’s a double bed, a desk and chair, and closet space. It has been decorated by, Nils, our 16 year old, which explains the car posters. 😉
Our guests would stay in this room during the week (Sunday night to Thursday night), while Nils is at his mom’s house. When Nils stays with us on Friday and Saturday nights, our guests sleep in the bedroom we are currently working on. This bedroom is larger, has a mattress, comforter and sheet set, and unfinished wood floors. It is a bit cluttered because we are renovating it, but it would just be for 2 nights a week.

* As we are in the process of building a second bathroom, there is currently just one bathroom to share. *

What else …

There are too many options for a wide-range of activities in San Diego, CA to cover!

Our South Park neighborhood alone is wonderful for exploring and, as mentioned earlier, is known for its walk-ability and bike-ability.

Our home is about a 5 – 10 minute walk to cafes, restaurants, small galleries, quirky shops, etc.
We are a few miles away from the best San Diego has to offer. Balboa Park ~ a nationally recognized park with a gorgeous Museum Row ~ is just 2 – 3 miles away. Downtown is several miles away. There is a Saturday Farmer’s Market that is about a 15 minute walk. Too many places to mention for hiking and other outdoor activities.
