Teaching
local culture, language, dances, songs, identity we are trying to create a genuine intercultural space where children are proud to teach their culture in exchange for learning from other cultures. Also we live in a paradise in the country , a bird refuge, lots of native trees and flowers, constructions based on earth like adobe, tapial and quincha, natural paints out of clay and cactus gum. we are at 3300m altitude (10000 ft) in the central Andes of peru in a wide valley.
Teaching English to indigenous children from Kindergarden to end of primary school, sharing your local traditions and culture, food(cooking), songs, history, geography in exchange from learning the local equivalents, helping in the organic field, helping with animals (chicken, ducks, geese) and generating creative ideas for the implementation of a playful space for kids
English, Spanish, french (native), Italian all very fluent
Bedrooms with shared bathroom very comfortable with wifi, hot water shower, double and single bed in room or triple single, we usually share the cooking with volunteers, we prepare lunch and they do dinner or vice versa,

First, we were in charge of English classes in two classrooms, having language immersion, creating experiments, cooking, learning new vocabulary and sharing about our own country and culture. In general, kids learn by doing, have different basic levels of English and are easily dissipated. During breaks, we bonded with them and played football or hangman. Behavioral issues needed to be sorted out and it is a long process with all the teachers. A few staff members also left the school during our stay because it was a lot to manage. Since everyone needs to collaborate and follow the same strategy under Rosario's control it seems that teachers don't have enough space for their initiatives.
Then, we participated in the first meeting with parents and presented the starting point of a new communitary library for their children. A free catalog system for all the available books to read and lend has been launched and a list of youth literature has been given at the bookshops to buy new documents. We created a WhatsApp group to communicate easier with parents and completed information in different administration folders.
Finally, the task of helping out at home with cooking and cleaning wasn't very fullfilling. We mostly ate alone for breakfast and lunch, even stopped cooking for the family's 8-year-old child Kenn who did not eat everything and made a disastrous spicy soup for the school staff. Furthermore, we did not get a chance to garden with Elmer, like previous volunteers did. The whole school organization was energy consuming and stressful, so that we enjoyed little family and private time. Our support was clearly not enough and the flow disrupted eventually. On the other hand, talking with Yves about travel, couple and life values was very rewarding and we liked knowing about his adventures too. After all, we're aware that our own issues got in the way of our volunteering.
We wish all the best to this place and understand that likely it's a question of time, meanwhile everything is going to be well functionning in the future. It has a big potential to improve and include volunteers more efficiently.
