*️️*️️ Priority will be given to volunteers coming for 2+ months 🙂 … but if you can only stay a shorter while, we can usually arrange something *️️*️️

We are Israel's first social restaurant – located in the market of Haifa 🙂

We are a project dedicated to creating a unique and accessible platform for engaging the public in sustainability, community and social action, by promoting local activities to combat the global food waste crisis.
We do this through two main principles:

1. “Rescue” of food that would otherwise go to waste – from farms, shops and markets.
2. Together with our chef and many volunteers, preparation of meals for the public on a pay-as-you-feel (PAYF) basis. People can choose to pay for their meal and related activities of the project, according to their desire and ability. Payment can be in money or time.

Through food, something that everyone needs and enjoys, we open up a range of subjects to engage in. Those who are less fortunate can have access to a great meal. Those who are part of the general consumer society can get a direct “taste” of the global food waste crisis and contribute to the project, with their money/time/skills. We plan to campaign to raise awareness, and organize relevant action around food waste in Israel.

We now have opened Israel's first food-rescue restaurant, in the Talpiot market in Haifa!

I stayed for 6 weeks with the project, and it was a great experience for me! As a long term volunteer I got the title as 'Opening- and jam master', which means I had the duty of open the restaurant every day, and make jam.
The kitchen environment is inspiring and always filled with chatting and laugher. The organization attracts amazing people… read more from all over the world, and I stayed at the R. Room, with other volunteers. The time I spent there I learnt a lot about myself, where to push myself, my limits and how solve problems in a creative way. A vibrant organization that strives a worthy cause! A lot of work needs to be done & this means that the full amount of volunteer hours are always made & sometimes more. I've spent 4 months with the host. And I don't even have words to describe how great the experience has been. I have had the opportunity to get to know the Israeli culture, the language (baaaasic things), the music, the sense of humor… I just felt at home and I miss this place so much.
This project is one of the most interesting experiences you… read more can find in the Middle East. If you go there, you'll get to know a lot of people who put a lot of effort to run the project and to make this world a better place. They are so inspiring.
Going there is also a good opportunity to travel the country and to understand the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Haifa (where the project is located) is a very interesting city, full of nice people and many cultures living together. If you go there with an open mind and a positive attitude, I promise… It will be one of the best experiences in your life!

I volunteered two month ago for one week here, chopping vegetables or cleaning the dishes. Even though the work is simple, it can be quite busy, what doesn`t really bother because you always have great company to chat. Just be aware that the restaurant is depending on the service it gives to the customer so the… read more work is well scheduled and sometimes tight, breaks are included and there is always some great food provided.
Shai, Cobi and especially Berta are always welcoming and there for you to answer any question, requests and to help out with any problem.
Thank you three for this! You always made me feel very welcome and even though I just have been there for one week, I could show up anytime and feel still like a part of "the family" and I am sure it will be the same when I suddenly show up again. Shai is the soul of this project, very compassionate and hard working. I wish the team further success and a loooot of fun 🙂

My stay at with the host lasted only for one week because I didn’t have more time, but I tried to absorb it all and had a very intense and unforgettable time! The staff consists of an equal amount of international and local volunteers. One of the latters hosted me and I felt very comfortable at her apartment.
At the restaurant, there’s different… read more tasks to fulfill whereas one shift lasts around 5 hours: washing the dishes, cleaning, collecting the food from the markets, serving food or helping in the kitchen – the meals are delicious and you are free to just try it out in between 😉 The work can be quite exhausting, so I was always thankful for working in a place with nutritious food! In your free time you can discover Haifa or hang out with the other volunteers, the vibes are pretty good 🙂
I think this project is a good way to learn more about global food waste and how it contributes to climate issues. This project has managed to increasingly raise awareness on this problem in Israel – in their wonderful restaurant in Haifa!

our experience has not been very positive. we received one day before arrival the news that we would have hosted by a hostel and that we would have worked two days in this. I do not think it's right … we were not happy even with the food we received, and we met other volunteers forced like us to buy simple food. We contacted this organisation about a month before we hoped to start at the project, and spoke with the volunteer coordinator to find a date that would work for everyone. We made plans around the project and had high hopes for what we truly believe is a great mission. The coordinator was in contact with us in the weeks leading up to the project… read more and led us to believe we would have a host and a home in Haifa. But on the very day we were scheduled to arrive, we received a message from the new coordinator explaining that there was no host for us for the next two weeks, and our eventual host would be an apartment a 40 minute bus ride away from the restaurant & that we would pay for the bus fare. As an alternative, she had volunteered us to live & work in a hostel, which was a far cry from the project we had come to Haifa for. We are disenchanted with this organisation, to say the least, and hope that future volunteers are treated with more respect for their time and energy.

Rather you'll be assigned a local host… read more family to stay with, which is both theoretically & practically different from the common (& suggested) workaway experience. (Your stay with a local family of course is charity on the family's part, whereas usually lodging is part of a fair trade with hosts. & you'll likely live apart from other volunteers or people involved with the project, so won't get to know them quite well unless you're proactive on this front.)

This is so much more than a simple team of workers, for me it has been a family! This place is a state of mind, it's a way of living. I've worked there for two weeks, but it felt like home from the very first moment I stepped in. The team is so kind, caring, friendly and chill, but hard working when needed. What they do there it's such an amazing… read more and inspiring project! They're able to leave a good memory to whoever sit at those tables and so to spread the main ideal of the reataurant. In addition, the atmosphere was so international! Volunteers come from all over the world and are all friendly and interesting people. Last but not least, they're quite flexible with the working times and Haifa is a nice city and from there it's pretty easy and affordable to reach Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

This was my very first WorkAway Experience and I had a truly AMAZING time there!
Not only was fighting food wastage a great cause to support, it also gave me the opportunity for experience in a wide variety of fields ranging from food rescue to kitchen assistance, general caretaking and maintenance as well as direct service for guests.

Ronen, Shai and Ido live and promote a unique sense of brotherhood & friendship where every volunteer is warmly welcomed. I got to stay at the apartment of some WONDERFUL friends of the project that truly integrated me in their community and I am very GRATEFUL for this amazing experience.

I felt really grateful to be part of such a wonderful project! The energy the people put into it is contagious! I was welcomed warmly by everyone and all were very interested in me.

During my 5-week stay I did the dishes, prepared the restaurant for the service, cleaned the floors and toilets, rescued food from the wholesale market (2x), served… read more customers, helped at an event and cooked many things in the kitchen.

I especially valued that I was able to talk to Shai about anything which I might have thought would be different and him being very willing to listen and adapt whenever possible.

I was hosted in two wonderful apartments by locals and therefore felt at home.

This is a big family. Gardener, engineer, student, . helpers ! Food connect people ! Shai, the founder, welcomed me with a big smile. As a traveler he knows what you need and he will do his best to provide you everything ! He is flexible, open minded. Most of the time I was cleaning dishes or the restaurant. Meditation as Shai called it with his… read more humor. I also cooked, saved food or gardened . His natural kindness makes everything easy. We decided together the schedule and it was very possible to suggest new ideas. We had interesting discussions, we laugh, we ate, we danced, .. He put me in contact with his friends to help me . Shai also invited me to visit his mother . I could not talk about this project without talking about Shai because he gives all his energy in it . If you want to make the world a better place, here is an exemple of place you should visit and help !
