We are family of two adults and three children who live in the very pretty bushland of Crafers in the Adelaide Hills. We currently have two koalas in our garden, an echidna at our post box and a very big visiting kangaroo. A 20 min drive, straight down the freeway or bus will take you into Adelaide city. We have spent the past two years travelling the world (visiting 28 countries) and meeting lots of workawayers, so now that we are settling down again we'd LOVE to meet some travellers. The bus stop is about a half hour walk so if you don't have your own car we are happy to drop you there when we can, and pick you up as long as it's not too late!

You'll be living in Australian bushland, with the chance to see some wonderful wildlife. You will learn how to take care of native bushland. I'll be speaking English and and I can help with written grammar if needed as I am a teacher.

Ok the work…we basically live on a 2 acre bush block and need some help tidying it up. We need to drag logs and dead wood to a wood pile (we have been doing this ourselves but some help would be great!) and tidy up the garden and bushland, fix the chicken coop. I need help cleaning the house, or cooking.
We would love to share our evening meals (if you want to) and hear about your travels.

Bedroom within our home (we live in a modern log cabin). Two single beds, that can be pushed together for couples. We'd love to share our evening meals with you. You are also welcome to join us for breakfast. We have good wifi too.
What else …

We are a few minutes drive from Mount Lofty Summit (Lookout) ,Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens (these are beautiful!) and the Cleland Conservation Park (where you can cuddle a koala). The famous German village of Handorf is a 10 minute drive – it's a great place to order German beer (or Australian) and eat some good German food. Adelaide city is about 25 min bus ride. (we can drop you at bus terminal) and the gorgeous beaches of Adelaide about 25 minutes away. We are surrounded by amazing vineyards and great places to eat. Quaint villages of the Adelaide Hills including Stirling, Aldgate and Bridgewater (with its historic mill and excellent pub) are only a few minutes away. McLaren Vale the famous wine region is less than a half hour drive too, so with us as your base, you will be able to see so much. Oh yes, I forgot to say that if you are a keen cyclist this area is where the Tour Down Under rides though. So lots of amazing scenery to see on your bike. And a big downhill cycle to the city centre on a bike path.

We are a non smoking family, so we wouldn't allow smoking in the house…because we are in a bush fire prone area, we would have to ask that if smoking outside you are EXTREMELY careful when extinguishing cigarettes as the bushland is very dry at the moment. We have three young children so we would ask that you don't swear when they are around (unless a big spider falls on you!) …and as they have school each day we'd ask you not to make too much noise after they go to bed. We're a pretty relaxed, fun family, so just come and enjoy meeting a well travelled family who'd love to suggest 'must see' places to visit….and hopefully you can share with us your fav places!

I spent almost a week with Duncan, Alva and their 3 kids in February (sorry for the late feedback !!). It was my first workaway experience and I truly loved it. They are a lovely family and did everything they could so I feel at home. I definitely recommend to any workawers to visit them !!

Duncan and Alva are great hosts! When I arrived they picked me up (very early in the morning) from the busstation. When we walked around the property and Duncan told me about their plans, I was impressed by what they already had done and had in mind for the rest! Since they've had other workawayers before they had a routine which I easily could… read more adapt to. My day started at 8am and finished around 1pm with a coffeebreak in between. Since the family only moved here a couple of months ago there was enough to do. I had different kind of tasks, like helping in the household (cleaning kidsrooms/bathroom, some ironing), some organising, preparing the tent for guests and sometimes outside work in the garden. The variety in jobs made the days go by fast. I stayed here for 2,5 weeks but time flew by. In my spare time Duncan and Alva were always willing to bring me to the busstop if the car was available, since the nearest busstop is 40 minutes walking. The area they live in is amazing! You can spot lots of opposums, kangaroos and sometimes a koala in the garden. I slept in a spare glampingtent which kind of gave me my own space, even though I was always welcome in the house! The kids were very open and friendly to me. I enjoyed talking to and spending time with them. When the family watched a movie they asked me to join, which I really liked. Besides all this the family has been traveling a lot so they have a lot of interesting stories to tell. I had a great time here and hope to be back!

Alva, Duncan and their kids were all very welcoming and easy to talk to and be around. The work was never too hard or too much, always with morning tea at 10 am and lunch around 1pm. I did some cleaning in the house, removing brambles in the garden and helped out a bit with the airBnB/event glamping. On one of my days off, Alva gave me tips for exploring the adelaide hills, and dropped me off and picked me up at convenient places.

Alva and Duncan are very dedicated and thoughtful people who want the best for everyone, and I wish them the best with all their projects! I enjoyed my stay with them for little more than a week and would gladly recommend anyone to come and stay with them as well 🙂
