Description

We are a government registered NGO charity run group of schools (registered Non-Profit) with three locations just outside of Siem Reap City. We invite students between the ages of 4 and 20 to attend English and Computer lessons. Our schools are located in the beautiful Cambodian countryside. We support over 750 children from the surrounding villages by giving them free lessons in English and I.T.

Help

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation and we have had more than a thousand people from all over the world come and volunteer for a few weeks or even a few months. We offer a number of opportunities for volunteers such as teaching English, IT or general maintenance work like gardening or building. We also invite volunteers to fundraise or help promote the school so that we can receive donations. We are a not for profit, non government organisation and we continue to survive purely from donations and the hard work and compassion of volunteers.

Anyone is welcome to volunteer, you don’t have to be a native English speaker and if you aren’t comfortable teaching there are a number of different things you can do to help such as building or maintenance. We have hosted more than 1000 volunteers from over 50 different countries. We only ask that volunteers stay at least 2 weeks so that the children have time to get to know you and that you can settle into your volunteering role.

A typical day volunteering is around 5 hours of teaching or working time, this varies depending on which school volunteers help at, and which tasks they are doing. There is usually a break in the middle of the day to rest through the hottest part of the day, usually in a hammock by a fan.

On the weekend volunteers are free to do whatever they wish, they can see the nearby temple of Angkor Wat, take cooking classes with the school director and his wife or go visit markets and restaurants with their fellow volunteers. There is also a spa nearby at a 5-star hotel which is a popular option for volunteers to cool off in the pool and maybe get a massage. By the end of a whole week of volunteering you will definitely deserve to let your hair down, relax and enjoy what Siem Reap has to offer.

Accommodation

Volunteers will stay in accommodation with the school director and his family along side other Khmer people in the countryside. There are often Khmer friends and relatives coming and going who are happy to chat to the volunteers. The volunteers who stay will see a different, more authentic side of Khmer people and their lifestyle than those who come to Cambodia as tourists.

The accommodation is basic, simple Asian style with a few western extras thrown in to make you feel a little more comfortable. Please don’t expect a 5 star resort, expect to be "living like the locals" when staying with us, it’s all part of the experience. We have four large dorm rooms for our volunteers to share (one 15 bed dorm, one 6 bed dorm, and two 3 bed dorms.) as well as four private rooms (subject to availability). Each volunteer will be provided with a mattress (all of which are new or purchased very recently), pillows, blankets as well as a private mosquito net and personal fan.

We have 6 bathrooms on site for our volunteers, 4 of which have recently been fitted to feature western style toilets, sinks and showers (cold water only).

We are one of the only properties in the area to benefit from 24 hour electricity, which we are happy for anyone staying with us to use freely. We are also the only location in about a 4km radius to have full WiFi access. It’s not super fast or suitable for downloading huge files or streaming, but for emails, Facebook, Google searches, lesson planning and other simple tasks it’s fine!

In the front yard we have a large hangout area for volunteers to relax together under during their free time. It features a big covered seating area, hammocks, a led tv with cable, a sound system, a pool table, a guitar and a variety of different games.

Please note, that as a free school, we have no income to support your stay; therefore we ask that you contribute towards your accommodation costs.

What else …

We welcome everyone to apply to volunteer. You do not need to be a native speaker, you do not need qualifications and you do not need teaching experience. We are simply looking for people with a good written and spoken level of English to help out.
