The Barren Isles archipelago, off the west coast of Madagascar in the Mozambique Channel, is one of the few remaining refuges of marine life in the western Indian Ocean. In addition to supporting a wide range of endemic and endangered species, its diverse ecosystems support more than 4,000 traditional Vezo fishers. Blue Ventures is committed to supporting local communities in the creation of the Barren Islands Locally Managed Marine Area. Participatory monitoring of the fisheries in this region has been ongoing since 2012 and monitoring was recently expanded to the islands to support and guide management decision making, and monitoring systems for the nascent LMMA we are now looking to compile these landings data along with other social and economic information to provide a detailed profile of the fisheries of the Barren Islands. The Fisheries Biologist will be required to work closely with the Barren Isles Project Coordinator, and Conservation Officer based in Maintirano, western Madagascar, as well as the Monitoring and Evaluation manager (UK) to collate information, perform data analyses and write up a report profiling the nature of the fisheries of the Barren Islands LMMA.

Responsibilities

● Compile all relevant literature on fisheries of the region, and conduct a literature review summarising what is known about the status of the fisheries of the Barren Islands to date.
● Analyse finfish data collected through participatory monitoring in the Barren Isles with a specific focus on trends in catches of key species selected by communities for further management action.
● Compile biological and management data from the literature on the key species identified by local communities for management.
● Synthesise information from prior social surveys, focus groups and interviews on dependence on the fishery, ecological and economic trends, and perceptions of management.
● Write the first iteration of a report on the status of fisheries in the Barren Isles, using all available information. The report should outline all current known knowledge on the status of the small-scale fisheries in the Barren Isles.
● Provide recommendations for further information required to understand the status of fisheries in the Barren Isles and move towards a basic stock assessment.

Outputs

● Fisheries status report within 3 months of start date.
● Submission of all data analysis sheets and other research documents within 3 months of start date.

Requirements Essential

● Post graduate level qualification in Marine Ecology, Conservation, Fisheries or other related subject essential.
● Excellent report writing and analytical skills.
● Capable of working autonomously and with initiative, while keeping in close communication and coordinating with a diverse group of colleagues remotely.
● Proven track record writing similar reports.
● High level of spoken/written French or English.
