Description
We are involved in animal welfare on the small and beautiful island of Mayreau, Southern Grenadines, St Vincent, West Indies, where we have a spacious, characterful wooden house with lovely sea views. As we are only able to be in Mayreau for two or three months a year, we seek animal loving people who will stay there in our absence, to look after our three rescue dogs and to be proactive in looking out for the welfare of the island animals. This opportunity would be most suitable for a couple or two friends.

Help
Apart from looking after our own three gorgeous rescue dogs, and daily beach walks for the neighbour’s chained dogs, we encourage our volunteers to engage with the local people and children with regard to animal welfare issues. We also ask our volunteers to help any animals in trouble, and arrange to seek veterinary help on neighbouring islands, as and when necessary. Anyone with veterinary skills would be particularly welcome. It would also suit animal loving artists/writers looking for a bolthole, and helpers with handyperson/DIY skills, who might enjoy adding to the comforts of the house by perhaps making driftwood furniture, for example.

Accommodation
Simple but spacious and cool wooden house, on the Windward side of the island, with beautiful views. The house has a large balcony overlooking the Tobago Cays, an upstairs gallery with double bed, and another double bed downstairs, sectioned off to one side of the open plan living room. The house is simply and basically furnished, with an outdoor bucket style shower. We built it in as eco friendly a style as we could. It has a garden.
Some photos of the house and dogs will be posted on this site as soon as possible ( I have just today discovered Workaway).

What else …
Volunteers will have plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling and diving. The beaches and the water are beautiful. You can walk everywhere around the island (there are very few vehicles on the island, which adds to its charm). There is a terrific kite-surfing school on the neighbouring island of Union, which can be reached in 20 minutes on the school boat. And you can swim with turtles in the protected waters of the Tobago Cays, which is a protected Marine Park.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
This is a great opportunity to get involved with the local community on this small and still quite untouristy island (population around 280 people). You will get to know everybody, and the longer you stay and the more you learn, the more fascinating it is. It is a chance to sample the « old time » Caribbean. .
