Help create a community hostel in Kathmandu, Nepal

    Description

We are a team of travelers committed to opening a community hostel located 7 kilometers outside of Thamel, Kathmandu, in Ramkot. The idea of a community hostel is to change the way we travel, bringing together different cultures and ideas to create a home away from home where you are free to express and be yourself. We encourage artists to paint, gardeners to garden – if you have a talent, we will have a project for you. And if you don't have a talent, don't worry, you will find it here! We started rebuilding and upgrading a hostel a month and a half ago and are looking for volunteers to help build and maintain our property. The property is approximately two acres of mostly pine forest with a kitchen, swimming pool, terraces and sleeping areas tucked away within it. Currently we have three dorms and two private rooms (twenty four beds in total) for customers and volunteers, with the plan to build another dorm and living space dedicated to our volunteers. We are planning for the dorm and living space to be built on land that is currently undeveloped and so we are looking for volunteers with construction and manual labour experience. However our other projects include painting, building an oven, general maintenance and an organic vegetable garden so volunteers with a wide range of skills are welcome. We can provide our volunteers three meals per day, a free place to sleep and advice on what to do with your time off

You don’t realise what it means to live in a community until you’re there. The feeling of all contributing toward the common goal of running a property, working hard during the day and then chilling out together swapping stories at the end of the night, the creating of new art pieces – this is a place where you can both relax and feel accomplished by what you help to build or create. We aren’t in the middle of Kathmandu, meaning you miss the worst of the pollution and traffic chaos. Where we are located in Ramkot, is still largely a Nepali style village and there is plenty of time to wander down drink chai with the locals and experience what all of Nepal was like only fifty years ago.

You will learn the most from other volunteers and from other travellers. How we operate is to use whatever skills each volunteer has and create something for the community. In this way you will be around people with various different skills and backgrounds, and we can all learn from each other

FREE FOOD FREE ACCOMMODATION The priorities are to clean and repaint the existing dorms, private rooms and kitchens, as well as clear the land in preparation to build the next dormitories and living space. But volunteers with construction, engineering, gardening, architecture, painting, cleaning, – basically ANY skills! – are welcome to contribute to our projects. All our building projects are eco-focused meaning we use the materials available to us and are mindful of our impact on our environment. The new dorm is to be built from the clay and sand available after clearing the space, bound by lime. The bamboo growing on the property is also available for construction. The organic garden will need to be made from scratch, so volunteers with knowledge about cultivating good soil and avoiding the use of pesticides are highly favoured.

When arriving, you can come to a Backpackers hostel in Thamel where we can pick you up via truck or motorbike. Ramkot is still a village outside of Kathmandu and taxis can sometimes struggle to find us. Once you're here, there is a local mini bus that goes into Kathmandu daily which has sights such as the Monkey Temple and the Swayambhu temple. Near to Ramkot is also a women's Buddhist temple also. Ask for more details.

As a community hostel, we were inspired by our partners in Goa. If you are travelling into to India, you have to pay them a visit. We believe in changing the way we travel. Slowing down and creating something meaningful in every place you visit. This sense of community and sense of 'home' is what you find missing when you travel long term. As travellers, we have been skint with little money, and we know what it's like to be on a tight budget. We ourselves have been volunteers, couch surfers, and creators of art across the world. We want to share our experiences and learn from other travellers in a safe and expressive environment. Boom, welcome!
