Hi, I am Tika. I am a teacher at the local government secondary school in Maipokhari village. I am living with my family in Sandakpur-3, Maipatal village in the Ilam district. There are 4 family members in our family. Me, my wife (dika), son (suman) and a daughter (sudha). The village is located around 600km from Kathmandu with an altitude of 2225 mt.
The Ilam district is famous for its tea farms. We have our own organic farm, with fruit & herbal plants and a nursery consisting mainly of kiwi plants. We have also two cows. We are growing kiwi, black tea, ground apples, chickpeas, cucumber and beans. Volunteers are warmly welcomed to my farm as well as my family. You can experience rural life in the east of Nepal and you can get a true sense of local rural life.
Our village and its surroundings are quite green and it's known as the greenest district of Nepal as well as the tea paradise. If you like, you can do many activities here.
Experience your pleasant stay within the clouds at our family operated property. Start your day to a fresh cup of Ilam Tea from our Organic Self-Sustaining Farm and work your way through our local kitchen using our local produce. Moreover; experience our homecooked Dal-Bhath for a hearty and soulful experience.
The environment is cold (but not overly so) here due to the altitude, thus it is best to bring some warm clothes.

Daily tasks:
Volunteers can help us in our daily routines. This can include, cutting grass for our cow, weeding our nursery, picking tea leaves, planting new plants, etc. We also want to improve our kiwi farm, nursery of herbal plants , as well as help with vermiculture and horticulture.
We are always open to creative ideas and would love to help volunteers in making the happen.
We are asking for 4-5 hours per day from volunteers and they will have 1 full day off per week (like the locals!).
—
What to see:
If you are interested in wildlife, then our farm is the perfect place for you. We are surrounded by interesting wildlife. A recent survey on our farm found nearly 100 species of colourful moths and more than 8 species of orchid in our land. For those interested in birds, it is also a great location for birding, with lots of species available just from our gardens.
There are several nearby trekking sites including Chintapu, Sandakpur, Tappu, Todke Waterfall, Maipokhari Lake as well as a Red Panda Sightseeing area.
—
Food:
Unlike many other home-stays we offer a varied diet and besides the typical dal bhat, we also eat noodle dishes, pyagi, rice pudding, fresh milk, curd, cheese, etc. We mostly eat vegetarian but occasionally meat also (but this is not a problem if you are vegetarian).

How to Reach our Farm :
From Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal you can find either a day or night bus to the city of Ilam. It is about 16 hours to Ilam from Kathmandu.
You also can find planes to Chandragadi City from Kathmandu. Your bus will stop at Ilam Bazar, where we can collect you. If we can not collect you, it is possible to take a taxi from the bus stop for 170 NPR. The farm is about 16 km north of Ilam Bazar. You can also come by foot from Ilam Bazar if you want to hike.

Teaching
Volunteers will be able to learn Nepalese culture, language and experience local life. Volunteers also will have a chance to enhance their agricultural knowledge and they can see the beauty of the district, and discover the surroundings.
Volunteers can help with our daily routines. Besides this, we are planning to build a bamboo cottage and a greenhouse. We also want to improve our kiwi farm, nursery of herbal plants ,vermiculture and horticulture.
We are always open for creative ideas and would love to help volunteers make their ideas a reality.
We are asking for 4-5 hours per day from volunteers and they will have 1 full day off per week (just like the locals!).
Nepali, English, Hindi
We have a shared room for 2 persons and a common bathroom with hot water and a Nepalese-style toilet. We have electricity in all rooms. Because of a current lack of facilities in this area, we currently do not have internet, but we are looking forward to providing it in the future. You can however, use data for internet.
Because I am working at a local school, I won't always be at the farm but there will always be someone there to help you.
We can provide 3 meals per day. We cook traditional Nepalese food, mainly vegetarian. The food is healthy and fresh. As a family, we like drinking tea so you will also get tea a couple times a day.
We are always happy to welcome new guests (volunteers).
We can guide you to Todke waterfall which is the second tallest waterfall of Nepal, Maipohari Lake and local areas and celebrations. This place is good for trekking. There are some trails which can take you to beautiful views of the Himalayas. The altitude of the mountains are quite high, ranging from 2600 to 3600 meters. During your free time you can visit neighbouring villages and interact with the friendy locals.

There is a strong routine as expected for any farm life but the jobs are always… read more different and we got to try lots of things e.g. bamboo splitting, grass cutting, potato weeding, herb weeding, cow food collecting! Each morning at 6.30 ish (after our home brewed tea around the fire) one of us delivered the fresh cow milk to the cheese factory down the road whilst the other one got to work on mixing up a feast for their cow!! There’s a couple hours work then you get your big breakfast, then working again with a tea break before smaller lunch and either some more work or we did art some afternoons of the property.
We were lucky enough to be there over Nepali New Year and so all 6 of us headed to the local lake and dika and sudha had to put up with every other person we went past asking for a selfie!! Sudha also very kindly took us on the long walk to the waterfall. The walk was beautiful and a treat to see.
We absolutely adored the food- so so nice to eat authentically and completely organically. Big portions and always seconds thirds and fourths on offer! One night we cooked a veggie burger for everyone to try which was so fun. Just so yummy and the best fuel ever for the hard work on the farm.
So far away in the world now and Can’t quite believe that we got to have this experience. There were times when we were frozen, felt unsure of what we were supposed to be doing and sometimes we were just a bit lazy….! But everyone was incredibly welcoming and treated us as if we were simply one of them and had been living that way for years!! The cultural exchange happens without even noticing it and I hope you mutually got out as much as we did!!
In fact, Ishraki Kazi is the person who cannot be described by words. His reliability and amazing ideas in each aspects are his properties.
Ishraki is the best volunteer till now we had. His habits, helping thoughts and obedience adds more positivity on his habits.
His amazing arts are… read more his extra introduction.

They are hard working people and the rural life is quite laborious on a daily basis, yet there is such great peace and joy in the eyes… read more of every individual that I met in Ilam that led me to believe in peace again. Truly kind hearted people.
We ate together, somedays I tried cooking and despite my multiple failed attempts, the family encouraged me to keep trying and finally i was successful in making some edible food over the fire ^^
The work varries from day to day and season to season. Mostly farm maintainance and other things if you have particular skills that might be useful. Everyone is very welcoming to new ideas and want to share cultures. Each volunteer is dearly remembered through pictures and gestures they have left behind.
There will be many nights where you sit around the fire and share stories with one another about travels. Lots and lots of laughter to be had!
I was more that delighted and will always have a special place in my heart for my time in Ilam.
Thank you
-Ishraki
Ps. For future volunteers on a practical note. Be mindful that the journey from kathmandu to ilam is quite long. 24-30 hrs. And also the food is primarily vegetarian meaning low in protien. Just some things to prepare for 🙂 yet these are minor sacrifices for an experience that will be memorable for many many years to come! Best of luck in your travels and if you have any specific questions, feel free to message me directly ^^
She always wants us to be happy.
Her amazing cooking of varieties, soo missable.
At last, we all members… read more are very happy with you. And bless you to have yur life enjoyable like you had Ana.
Hope, will meet again in life.

To begin with, from the first moment I entered their home I was treated as part of the family. Each evening after a delicious meal prepared by either Dika or her beautiful daughter, Suda, we would sit in front of the ago(fire) and share stories and laugh… read more until the fire burned out in the dead of night. I felt so safe, so loved, and so comfortable with them because of the constant genuine care that each and every one of them showed me.
Secondly, I learned SO MUCH from them! I learned about eragation, fertilisation, agricultural maintance and the procedures behind cultivation, as well as learning that you can actually eat the root of a Mochai plant (corn) as though it is Sugar Cane (who knew? :P).
You will never feel bored living and working with them on their farm. You will either be going into the jungle chopping down grass, carrying crops across the field, selling milk down the road, or even preparing fresh tea by hand!
I feel so blessed and fortunate to have had this experience with such incredible, caring, and beautiful people who I now call 'family' .
Thank you so much Tika, Dika, Suman, and Suda. Thank you so very much.
Much love,
Your dear friend,
Danna x.
